5 Tips for Spring Cleaning Success + Checklist

I’m so excited and I just can’t hide it. I know. I know. I know. I know. It’s spring. It’s spring. It’s spring! And I’m wrapping my hands all around it and here’s why.

The winter was long. It snowed, my feet froze (in my house), and the rampant flu made me hibernate like a real bear. Now that spring has officially started, I’m ready to get started on some new projects. One thing that I’m a little behind on is deep cleaning. So this spring, I have plans to do a spring cleaning. Not just any ole’ cleaning where I hide stuff I don’t want people to see but a DEEP spring clean. As I’m cleaning, I have plans to rid my home of things I don’t need/love and organize items that have their own place. I’m pretty excited about this! ‘Cause let’s be honest…nothing can replace a clean and organized home. Here’s my 5 tips on how I’m planning to succeed with spring cleaning this year. Read this post to find out how you can too!

1. Pick a weekend

In order to get a lot accomplished, it’s best to set aside a day, weekend, or even a month to get all your spring cleaning done. This will all depend on how many tasks you have to complete and how much time you have to give to your list. Personally, I feel like I can accomplish most of the tasks for the interior of my home over the weekend. I’m planning on starting on a Friday afternoon and working through Sunday evening. I do have some other plans to take care of throughout the weekend but I’ve always reserved the time on my calendar. This will prevent me from filling the weekend with anything unnecessary.

For the exterior of our home, I’ll need the assistance of Brandon. I’ll check with him to see what tasks he can take care of outside (cleaning windows on ladder, pressure washing, cleaning of porches, etc.) and it’s feasible to do on the same weekend. We can always assign another weekend to take care of exterior tasks. However, it would be nice if we could get most things done on one single weekend. We shall see…

2. Make a checklist

Now that you’ve picked a date to tackle your spring cleaning, you need a list. Who likes list? I love lists to help me jump-start a project or tasks. I’m the worst at deep cleaning when I only have 15 minutes. The great thing is spring cleaning is a lot about those extra spots that don’t normally get attention – baseboards, window treatments, and the porches. It’s actually okay if I get out of hand this time. Ha! I’ve put some of the most popular cleaning tasks all on one list and I’m sharing it with you today. Spring cleaning is something I hope to do year after year, so I’m so happy to have a list to help me accomplish the task. If you’d like to download the Spring Cleaning Checklist then here it is.

3. Gather supplies beforehand

Now, that you’ve got a checklist of tasks you’ll be completing be sure to gather all the supplies you might need. I normally keep a lot of my favorite cleaning supplies on hand due to my Grove subscription. However, I already know we need to tackle some extra tasks like change our air filters and install a smoke detector. So, I’ll need to make sure I get those items before-hand. It’s important to have everything you need on hand so you can work quicker and more efficiently. Here’s a list of items you might need to complete your spring cleaning:

  • Trash bags
  • Old rags
  • All Purpose Cleaner
  • Toilet Bowl Cleaner
  • Glass Cleaner
  • Swiffer Dusters
  • Air filters
  • Light bulbs
  • Eraser Pads
  • Step-ladder

4. Make a music playlist

There is no denying that music gets you moving. I enjoy listening to music when I cook, clean, and just for fun. Music has the power to motivate you to finish a task. If you’ve got a big spring cleaning day/weekend planned, be sure to put on some of your favorite upbeat music to motivate you. Your hips will be swaying, moving, and you’ll be crossing tasks off your list. If you’re lost on where to start, I’ve made an upbeat “Spring Cleaning” Spotify playlist for you to use. I’ve got some oldies and a few new songs to get you inspired with spring cleaning. If that doesn’t suit your taste, go ahead and play the music that gets you motivated. Look on “workout” playlists too.

5. Get the family involved

Like I mentioned beforehand, I’ll be in need of Brandon’s assistance for some exterior tasks. Also, getting the kids involved is a great way to teach them how to perform certain household tasks and responsibility. We’ve slowly (and patiently) been giving the kids small chores to handle from time-to-time. This big spring cleaning would be a great time for the kids to get involved with cleaning the house. Also, this is a nice time to teach children how much work goes into keeping up with a home. Let’s see how much involvement from the family I’ll be able to get. I’m definitely going to ask for it! You should do the same.

Spring cleaning isn’t the easiest work but the rewards are so worth it. Once you’re done you have a clean home and maybe even tackled some organization. It’s a great feeling that will allow you to sleep better at night too. You’ll be ready to entertain guests and enjoy all that spring has to offer.
