Special moments – big and small, bring people together. With life being so busy and hectic, sometimes you have to carve out time for those you love, so you can create those special moments. Families can slow down and celebrate life together. One company believes the same thing – Dewey’s Bakery. Dewey’s Bakery is a family-owned business in Winston-Salem, N.C., established in 1930. The bakery’s treats have been a treasured tradition and has served generations of families with their baked goods. Year after year, Dewey’s Bakery strives to spread their mission of “creating moments that bring people together.” The easiest way I could think of to share in this mission is by having a picnic with your loved ones. A picnic is a simple way to share quality time together with those you love. You could make it a couples thing or bring the whole family. In addition to Dewey’s Bakery Soft Baked Cookies, there are only a few things you’ll need to pull off the perfect picnic. Here’s the four things you need to pack for a family picnic.

1. Picnic Basket

A picnic basket is perfect to tote around picnic essentials – plates, utensils, napkins, etc. Depending on the size, you might be able to fit everything in your basket. Here are some extra things to think about bringing with you – wipes or hand sanitizer, paper towels, straws, sunscreen, bug spray, and a first aid kit. You can find a vintage picnic basket at a yard sale or antique shop, pickup a new one, or improvise with an insulated tote. This is not a dinner party, this picnic is all about creating special moments together. Don’t get caught in the details!

2. Food

Finger foods and items that are easy to snack on is best for a picnic. Adults and kids can all enjoy cheese, crackers, and fruit. Pick up your family’s favorite in each category. Be sure to add also add something sweet like Dewey’s Bakery Soft Baked Cookies to your list too. While picking up picnic food essentials, from Walmart, I found Dewey’s Bakery Lemon Bar Soft Baked Cookies and Dewey’s Bakery Brown Butter Chocolate Chip Soft Baked Cookies. They were located on the cookie aisle (see picture below for exact location). In addition to the yummy flavors, these cookies are baked with clean ingredients so you don’t have to feel bad about sharing with the ones you love. One less thing to worry about!

In the South, we celebrate every moment with food. There is no denying we love food. No matter how big the occasion, food is a part of every celebration. We create moments around our favorite foods. Food makes us feel good. Then when we reminiscence on the good times we had together, we also talk about the food we shared. Dewey’s Bakery soft, chewy cookies, in unique bakery-inspired flavors, are like no other cookie you’ve ever tasted. That’s why they are now an essential in our picnic basket. Every bite seems to transports you back to a warm and happy memory.

3. Entertainment

In addition to eating together, do an activity together. Remember the goal of the picnic is to promote being together. So bring things along that promote teamwork and cooperation. Playing cards, a Frisbee, a board game, or even a small puzzle are good forms of entertainment for the whole family. These are things you likely already own so bring along your favorites. When you work together, you also learn more about your family members – their likes, dislikes, and how they work under pressure.

4. Blankets/Pillows

A blanket and plush pillows provide ample seating on picnics. Bring multiple blankets to spread out on the grass. Place your picnic basket and other picnic essentials on top or have a seat there as well. A euro size pillow is good for providing cushion from the hard ground. If it’s cool enough you might find yourself so relaxed, you can take a nap. Just lay back on your blanket and relax. It’s still way too hot here in Louisiana for that but cooler days are ahead.

One thing we do a lot of in our family is laugh. Life can be so serious and busy too. That’s what I loved about the picnic – it allowed us time to be silly, slow down, and enjoy our time together. We can all do a better job of being friendlier, sharing with our neighbors, and just laughing a little. Dewey’s Bakery gets it. They know that Southern connection between food, people, and having a good time. It can be as simple as a picnic with those you love. It’s a reminder to slow down and create moments with those around you.
