My favorite season, summer, is well underway. It’s already been an adventurous summer keeping the kids busy, car trouble, and lots of outdoor activities. One thing we haven’t done much of is make cocktails. This was last year’s summer cocktail. But, enough is enough – it’s cocktail time! I’m finally sharing a delicious, original cocktail, I think you’ll like. It’s made of watermelons and a special wet bar guest – Midori. Midori is a green-colored, melon liqueur that has been sitting in our wet bar. We hadn’t used it for anything, but I knew that it would be perfect for my summer cocktail.
Because watermelons are plentiful during summer, they also seemed like a good fruit to incorporate into the drink. Midori plus watermelon and now I just need a splash of something else. This started a taste test. This is where the fun in recipe creation comes in. I could do an internet search of what would go well with my current ingredients or I could start tasting. With recipes, there is nothing like knowing exactly what does taste well together. Sip, sip, stir. In this case, I tried rum, pineapple, lime juice, and other variations for this watermelon and Midori cocktail. When I tasted it with lemon – that was it! So, here’s the cocktail recipe I came up with. I’m calling it a Watermelon Splash Cocktail!Print
This refreshing watermelon cocktail blends sweet watermelon and a beautiful liqueur, Midori. Serve over ice and garnish with a slice of watermelon and mint.
- 3 ounces Strained Watermelon Juice
- 1 ounce Midori Liqueur
- 1 ounce Lemon Juice
- 1 ounce Vodka
- Blend 2 cups of fresh watermelon until smooth. Strain and set aside juice.
- Fill glass with ice and add watermelon juice.
- Add Midori. Liqueur should drain to bottom of glass.
- Add lemon and vodka. Garnish
This drink is definitely pretty and I love that about it. Summer is a time to find refreshing ways to cool down and I always look for that “refreshing” factor in a summer drink. Also, it’s good to look for foods that are in season – fruits that are sweet and ripe this time of year. Watermelons are widely available and very ripe during the summer months. When I saw them on sale for buy one, get one free, I knew that watermelons would be a good basis for this year’s summer cocktail. With the splash of lemon and vodka – it’s a perfect mix.
Serve this cocktail alongside a charcuterie and cheese board or grilled food. Either way, the sweet melon and the tart lemon taste will go well with all your favorite summer snacks and food. Even though it’s hot, I’m holding onto summer for as long as I can. The long warm days just make me happy. I feel inspired to keep going too – just keep swimming, just keep swimming (*in my Finding Dory voice). Maybe you hate summer and that’s okay – you’ll still love this cocktail. Give it a try and and let me know what you think.
